How to Check Your IRS Refund Check Status: Paper vs Direct Deposit

Paper Check vs. Direct Deposit: Know the Difference, Tracking a Direct Deposit Refund, and Tracking a Paper Check

How to Check Your IRS Refund Check: Paper Check vs. Direct Deposit: Know the Difference, Tracking a

How a refund is delivered changes what can go wrong with it and what you can do about it.

A direct deposit fails quickly and visibly. A cheque can be delayed, sent to an address you no longer use, or cashed by somebody else, and each of those has a different remedy and a different waiting period.

This covers how the two methods differ, how to track each, what to do when a cheque is lost or has been cashed, how a refund can be split, and why keeping your address current matters more than people expect.

Paper Check vs. Direct Deposit: Know the Difference

The IRS delivers refunds two ways: direct deposit to your bank account or a paper check mailed to your address on file. Tracking each requires different steps and timelines.

A cheque goes to the address on the return, not to any change you notified elsewhere. Keeping your address current with the tax authority, separately from the postal service, prevents most of the problems people spend weeks chasing.

Tracking a Direct Deposit Refund

Use IRS 'Where's My Refund' at IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app:

  • Available 24 hours after e-filing or 4 weeks after paper filing
  • Enter SSN, filing status, and exact refund amount
  • Status will show 'Refund Sent' with the date the deposit was initiated
  • Allow 1-5 business days from the 'Refund Sent' date for the deposit to appear in your account

Tracking a Paper Check Refund

After 'Where's My Refund' shows 'Refund Sent':

  • The check is mailed from the IRS on or near the shown date
  • Allow 5-10 business days for USPS delivery (longer for addresses far from IRS processing centers)
  • If 14+ days pass with no check, proceed to a refund trace

Lost or Stolen Check: Form 3911 Refund Trace

If your check has not arrived after a reasonable time:

  • Call the IRS at 800-829-1040 and request a refund trace, or
  • Mail or fax Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) to the IRS
  • Allow approximately 6 weeks for the IRS to process the trace
  • The IRS will cancel the original check and reissue if it has not been cashed

Why Direct Deposit Is Always Better

FactorDirect Deposit vs Paper Check
Speed1-5 business days vs 5-10+ business days by mail
SecurityNo risk of theft or loss in mail
TracingBank records confirm deposit vs. complex 3911 process
SplittingCan split into up to 3 accounts (Form 8888)

Splitting Your Refund: Form 8888

If you want to direct your refund to multiple accounts or buy US Series I Savings Bonds:

  • File Form 8888 (Allocation of Refund) with your return
  • Split into up to 3 accounts (checking, savings, IRA)
  • Buy Series I Savings Bonds in $50 increments with part of your refund

Undeliverable Refund Checks

If the IRS mails a check to an address that returns it as undeliverable:

  • The IRS holds the refund for 1 year
  • After 1 year, the refund is turned over to the US Treasury as unclaimed funds
  • Update your address with the IRS using Form 8822 before this happens

Pro Tip: Always update your address with the IRS if you move. File Form 8822 or update your address on your next tax return. The IRS does not automatically forward mail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where's My Refund shows 'Refund Sent' but I haven't received my check. What do I do?

Wait at least 14 days from the 'Refund Sent' date. Then request a refund trace by calling 800-829-1040 or filing Form 3911.

Can I change from a paper check to direct deposit after I file?

Not easily. Once filed, you cannot change the refund method through the IRS tools. However, if the check has not been mailed, some IRS phone representatives may be able to update the information. Call 800-829-1040 as soon as possible.

Someone else cashed my refund check. What do I do?

Report it to the IRS by filing Form 3911. The IRS will investigate and may reissue the check. This process can take several months. You may also need to file a police report.

What should be done if a cheque is lost or never arrives?

Confirm first that it was actually issued and to which address, then start the tracing process rather than simply waiting longer. A cheque sent to an old address is a common cause, and the address used is the one on the return rather than any change notified elsewhere. Keeping the address current with the tax authority, separately from the postal service, prevents most of this.

Is a direct deposit worth using instead?

For most people yes, because it removes the postal step entirely and is generally faster. The trade is that the details have to be exactly right: a transposed digit sends the payment nowhere useful and recovering it takes considerably longer than a reissued cheque. Check the account and routing numbers against a statement rather than from memory, and check that the account is still open.
